PHILADELPHIA — A group of Bay State Catholic activists are making their way to Philadelphia today in a show of support for the pope’s call for prison and immigration reform.

“The pope has deep mercy and compassion for all human beings, and teaches that,” said Maria Madera, who is part of the caravan heading to Philadelphia. “He shows, and on Sunday will show compassion for our brothers and sisters who are incarcerated, and we seek to do the same.”

The 25 people are from local faith-based organizations and plan to meet with others from around the country today to discuss immigration policy and incarceration as they follow Pope Francis around Philly. Tomorrow, they are scheduled to go to the Curran-Fromhold Correctional Facility while the pope visits the city prison.

The pope is set to meet with nine charged with murder, 15 with rape, and others with robbery and assault, according to reports.
