N.H. to focus on dealing with female inmates

Concord Monitor

CONCORD, N.H. — The League of Women Voters of New Hampshire has undertaken a two- year study of the status of incarcerated women in the state. The purpose of the study is to find out what changes should be made to New Hampshire’s correctional system and to lobby the Legislature to effect these changes.

So far, study committee members have visited six county correctional facilities. In addition, a recent meeting included two former inmates of the women’s prison in Goffstown, who related their personal experiences and answered our questions.

With the recividism rate in New Hampshire among women as high as 90 percent in some county jails, something needs to be done. For more information on this issue and the League, please log onto the website at LWVNH.org.
