ALEXANDER CITY, Ala. — Two Alabama state prison inmates were killed, and others injured in a single-vehicle crash of a Department of Corrections van.

The wreck happened Wednesday when the ADOC was transporting seven inmates from the Alex City Community Based Facility, said prison spokeswoman Kelly Betts.

Inmates Willie Crayton, Jake Jones, Bruce Clements, Thomas Bass, Heath Garrett, Shawn Wasden, and Richard Jackson were returning to the facility after work when the crash occurred on Elder Road in Dadeville .

Crayton was pronounced dead on the scene.

Jones and Clements were taken to an area hospital in critical condition. Clements later died.

Jones has since been transferred to another hospital and is in critical condition.

Betts said the other inmates were treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

The ADOC will dispatch the Critical Incident Stress Management Team and YesCare mental health care professionals to Alex City CBF today to offer support to affected staff and inmates.

Commissioner John Hamm in a statement extended his condolences to the family and friends of Creyton and Clements.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with you all,” Hamm said. “The quick and professional response of those first on the scene is very much appreciated by the ADOC. We will be doing all we can to support the staff and inmates affected by this tragic event.”

The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency is investigating.
