ROCKLAND, Maine — A convicted sex offender was found to not have violated his probation by attending church where children were present.
The Bangor Daily News reports that Jason S. Simpson, 47, was arrested on March 26 for attending a church service on March 22 in Augusta. A woman reported him to the probation office, voicing concern that her grandchildren were in the church as well.
Justice Daniel Billings ruled that Simpson had not violated his probation, though reasoning why was not provided.
Simpson was convicted in 2007 on eight counts of gross sexual assault involving a 5-year-old boy and a 7-year-old girl. Conditions of his probation included no contact with children.
In March 2014, he was ordered to serve an additional five months when he failed to notify his probation officer that he had moved and had stopped attending counseling.
