NJ COs asked to buy own safety gloves from vending machines

The gloves were priced at $1 for two pairs

SUSSEX COUNTY, N.J. — Sussex County corrections officers were forced to buy latex gloves from a vending machine inside the jail.

Officers were paying $1 for two pairs from the snack vending machine last weekend, NBC New York reported.

“It’s one of those stories, your mouth opens — ‘oh, my God, who thought of this?’” New Jersey PBA President Patrick Colligan said.

A state health department regulation states that facilities must provide safety gloves for free when officers are dealing with an inmate with a contagious infection, according to the news station.

Sheriff Michael Strada said free gloves are always available in the jail, and the issue with the vending machine has been resolved.

Colligan told New Jersey 101.5 FM that the gloves have been removed from the machine.
