Vegas cop fatally shoots suspect armed with CO’s TASER

The suspect told the dispatcher he was feeling suicidal and he was going to “blast it out with the police officers”

LAS VEGAS — A man in police custody at a hospital was fatally shot after he pointed a corrections officer’s TASER at police.

Capt. Kelly McMahill told Fox 5 that a suspect called 911 Sunday and said he was feeling suicidal. He said he had a firearm and was going to “blast it out with the police officers.”

When officers responded, they discovered the suspect passed out on the ground. After running his information, police found he had a warrant for his arrest. He was taken to Clark County Detention Center, but was not able to complete booking because he was too intoxicated, police said. He was transferred to the hospital per department policy.

A corrections officer was called to relieve a police officer from the hospital. He arrived with a bag that contained his TASER, paperwork, shackles and other items. The corrections officer left the bag inside the room when he stepped out to speak with the police officer.

McMahill said video shows the suspect reaching into the CO’s bag and grabbing the TASER. When a nurse and security guard entered the room, the suspect pointed the TASER at the security guard. Security ran out of the room to get help and the police officer ran into the room to find the suspect pointing the TASER at the nurse, Fox News reported. When the suspect pointed the TASER at police, the officer fired one round.

The suspect was pronounced dead at the scene. No officers or others were injured. Per department policy, the officer who fired the shots is on paid administrative leave pending an investigation.

The CO will be investigated to determine if he violated any policies or procedures by leaving the bag in the room.
