HARTFORD, Conn. — A 600-bed prison in Enfield will be converted into a “reintegration unit” as part of a series of initiatives by the governor to help convicts rebuild their lives.
Earlier this week Gov. Dannel P. Malloy announced proposals aimed at fostering what he calls a “second chance society.”
The Willard-Cybulski Correctional Institution will be converted as part of a Department of Correction plan to better prepare inmates nearing the end of their sentences for community re-entry and to reduce recidivism. The announcement was made Thursday in Bridgeport as the governor met with local leaders on his initiatives.
Malloy also has called for eliminating mandatory minimum sentences for nonviolent drug offenses and reclassifying the possession of illegal drugs as a misdemeanor unless there is evidence the person intends to deal drugs.
