DARWIN — Berrimah Prison in Darwin is allowing serving convicts to leave the prison, and sending them off to work in businesses across the city.
Northern Territory Attorney-General and Corrections Minister John Elferink is the mastermind behind “sentenced to a job”, and says he’s turned prisoners into taxpayers.
“The prisoners pay rent for their cells, and they pay five per cent of their income to a victims assistance fund. They are paying their debt to society in cash,” Mr Elferink said.
