MONTPELIER, Vt. — A new report from Vermont’s state auditor says the state Department of Corrections is coming up short in three key areas on finding housing for inmates coming out of prison.
Auditor Doug Hoffer cites not enough assurances released prisoners are getting the services they need. Service providers are supposed to report to the state about the services they provide, but Hoffer’s office found that nine grantees had provided inaccurate or unsupported data.
Hoffer also says the goals of the transitional housing program include enhancing public safety and reducing recidivism. But he says the Department of Corrections does not have adequate measures to determine how well those goals are being achieved.
Corrections Commissioner Andrew Pallito wrote in reply to Hoffer that the department is working to address the problems.
