CHICAGO — U.S. District Judge Joan Lefkow on Tuesday ordered former Chicago Police Cmdr. Jon Burge’s older brother’s Chicago home secured as additional bond following the fired cop’s perjury and obstruction of justice convictions.
Assistant U.S. Attorney David Weisman asked that Burge, 62, undergo electronic monitoring and home confinement at his Apollo Beach, Fla., home.
But Lefkow took Burge attorney Marc Martin’s suggestion and allowed Jeffery Burge to post his $275,000 home as additional bond.
“Brothers are not likely to betray each other, so I would impose that,” Lefkow said.
Burge had been free on $250,000 bond since he was charged in 2008 with lying about torture during his reign at Area 2 during the 1970s and 1980s.
After he was convicted Monday, prosecutors said they would not be seeking to revoke his bond.
Burge, who has “high-risk” prostate cancer, has always followed conditions of bond and has always appeared for his court appearances, Martin said.
On Monday, another Burge attorney, Rick Beuke, said his client would be staying in Chicago before his scheduled November sentencing.
But on Tuesday, Martin said, Burge would return to Florida as soon as his paperwork cleared.
Burge refused to comment.
