WINNIPEG — A former correctional officer is facing an assault charge after an inmate was beaten at the Winnipeg Remand Centre. Winnipeg police said the 30-year-old woman was arrested following a complaint from her former employer, Manitoba Corrections, about an alleged attack on an inmate Aug. 30.

As the Free Press first reported Sept. 29, the woman was one of three correctional officers fired following an internal investigation into the beating. A fourth correctional officer was suspended. Winnipeg police spokesman Const. Jason Michalyshen said the woman turned herself in to police Friday. She was released on a promise to appear in court at a later date.

Michalyshen said the woman’s identity has not been released because she has not yet been formally charged. Sources said several correctional officers punched an inmate and then tried to cover up the attack.
