VOLUSIA COUNTY, Fla. — A corrections officer who works part time as a security guard at Daytona International Speedway, is facing grand theft charges. He’s accused of stealing merchandise and selling it over the internet.
“He was in possession of a large amount of merchandise from the Daytona International Speedway.” Cops say a thief stole more than 100-thousand-dollars worth of items at the Daytona International Speedway, “Merchandise memorabilia from the Daytona 500, all the NASCAR races from out there. Hats, t-shirts, sweatshirts,”
Detective David Dinardi arrested 44 year old Shannon Wiggins for allegedly stealing the goods. “He does work part time out there as security during the special events so that kind of made it a little easier for him.” Not just any security guard. Police say, Wiggins is a high ranking corrections officer, “He is a Major with the Department of Corrections and works at the Tomoka Correctional Facility.”
Prison officials say Wiggins is currently on leave. He’s been paid for time he already earned. Dinardi says, “I’m disappointed any time anyone does it, I don’t think their position makes it any worse.”
