ORLANDO — A Lake County man who worked as a federal corrections officer has been arrested after investigators say he smuggled contraband into prison in exchange for thousands of dollars in bribe money.

Robert Brown, 32, worked at the Coleman federal prison in Sumter County. Investigators say he smuggled prescription pills, tobacco, cell phones and other items into the prison. He would deliver the contraband to prisoners and collect payment, according to a statement from the U.S. Department of Justice.

Federal agents say Brown started taking the bribes in January and has since collected about $7,100. Brown was arrested Thursday as he was collecting $2,600 for items he had already smuggled into the prison.

He faces bribery charges and has been released from jail on $25,000 bail. Brown could spend up to 15 years in prison if convicted.
