JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. — New information detailed in federal court citations issued to two off-duty Washington County sheriff’s deputies caught drinking and having sex in the woods indicates the two were not alone.
A third person, a man identified as a student and “not employed as a law enforcement officer,” also was cited, according to documents issued by U.S. Forest Service Officer Scott Cairnes.
The man’s name is included in citations issued to Chris Adkins and Scarlett Dennison, but his citations have not been filed in U.S. District Court in Greeneville yet. A clerk in the office said on Friday that she expects to have those documents early next week.
Dennison and Adkins are charged with public intoxication, possession of alcohol in a prohibited area and public nudity. Adkins faces an additional charge of child endangerment because his 2-year-old son was asleep in a tent nearby.
The trio was discovered while Cairnes and a Carter County sheriff’s deputy were patrolling national forest campgrounds.
Around 11 p.m., Cairnes and Carter County Deputy Derek Hamm were on foot patrol at Cardens Bluff Campground when they heard a woman talking loudly and using profanity.
Cairnes and Hamm walked toward the campsite and observed the trio drinking beer and stated in the citations that the speech of all three was slurred and rambling. As Cairnes and Hamm stood at the road, they saw Dennison and Adkins engage in sexual intercourse and then both men began touching Dennison, according to the citation.
