PHILADELPHIA — A disciplinary hearing is scheduled next week for eight staff members at the Curran-Fromhold Correctional Facility in connection with the escape of a prisoner last month who then killed a revered Lawndale jewelry-store owner, prison officials said.

The staffers who are being disciplined did not follow policy, prison spokesman Robert Eskind said, adding that the prison investigation found no deliberate collaboration to help Kevin Turner escape on Oct. 12.

Turner killed jeweler William Glatz during a botched robbery nine days later. Turner was also killed during the robbery.

The eight staff members have not been charged with a crime, but ultimately there may be suspensions, Eskind said.

Eric Hill, a business agent for Local 159, which represents Philadelphia correctional employees, could not be reached for comment last night.

Turner, who was being held on firearms and burglary charges, worked in the kitchen and escaped through the loading dock in a vehicle.

An investigation into who may have aided Turner in his escape is ongoing, police said.

Authorities said that several people - not necessarily corrections officers - may have aided in his escape.

Police on Wednesday charged Turner’s alleged robbery accomplice, Obina Onyiah, 27, with murder, weapons violations and related offenses.

Onyiah, of Frankford, has served time in prison for bank robberies in New Jersey.
