PROVIDENCE, R.I. — A former prison guard has been sentenced to three years in the Adult Correctional Institutions for assaulting inmates in the prison’s minimum-security facility in 2005 and 2006.
The Providence Journal reports that a Superior Court judge imposed three consecutive one-year sentences and ordered Kenneth Viveiros to serve nine months of the three-year term. The remaining 27 months will be suspended and he will remain on probation.
The 60-year-old Viveiros of North Providence and Gualter Botas, a fellow guard, were convicted in July 2008 on charges of simple assault and battery for striking four inmates with clipboards and phone books for possessing cigarettes and other contraband.
