PLYMOUTH — A former corrections officer has been charged with having sex with an inmate while employed at the state prison in Bridgewater.
Amy S. Carpentier, 38, of 2070 Country St., Attleboro, was arraigned Friday in Brock-ton Superior Court after turning herself in at the Plymouth police station. Carpentier had been indicted on the charge by a grand jury in December 2010, but authorities had been unable to locate her, according to Assistant District Attorney Thomas Flanagan.
Judge Raymond Veary released Carpentier on her promise to return to court and ordered her to stay away from her alleged victim and witnesses. She is due back in court Jan. 25.
Carpentier worked for the state Department of Correction from September 2003 until her termination in December 2010, according to department spokeswoman Dianne Wiffin. She had been assigned to the Old Colony Correctional Center, a medium-security prison located inside a 30-acre complex with Bridgewater State Hospital and several other correctional facilities.
Wiffin said she could not comment on the charges against Carpentier.
Massachusetts state law makes it illegal for anyone employed at a correctional facility to have sexual relations with an inmate being held there. If convicted, Carpentier could face up to five years in prison or a fine of $10,000.
