Former Calif. CO admits smuggling

SACRAMENTO — A former guard at the California Correctional Center in Susanville pleaded guilty Monday in U.S. District Court to a single count of wire fraud for taking money in exchange for smuggling tobacco and cellphones into prison.

Bobby Joe Kirby, 54, of Reno, Nev., faces a maximum 20 years in prison and a $250,000 when sentenced on Feb. 6, a spokeswoman with the U.S. attorney’s office said. Kirby worked as a correctional officer at the minimum-security facility.

Kirby confessed after his June arrest, saying that he had been receiving $150 for every cellphone he smuggled into prison, the spokeswoman said.
