ANNAPOLIS, Md. — A panel of leading Maryland lawmakers will be hearing from state corrections officials about actions being taken to address a contraband scandal at a state-run Baltimore jail.
The Legislative Policy Committee is scheduled to receive the briefing in Annapolis on Thursday.
Gov. Martin O’Malley’s administration has released a number of new actions that will be taken to address problems at the Baltimore City Detention Center and increase security at other correctional facilities.
At the jail, the state will add cellphone blocking technology to keep inmates from using contraband phones.
The state will also revise a character test to focus on ethics and integrity before hiring correctional officers. A polygraph unit for correctional officer applicants also will be created, and background checks on applicants will be expanded.
