NY jail workers to face charges in inmate beating

DA Robert T. Johnson said that the suspects would be arraigned in State Supreme Court, but provided few other details

NEW YORK — A former high-ranking official of the New York City Department of Correction and nine current correction officers and supervisors will be charged on Wednesday in connection with the severe beating of an inmate on Rikers Island, the authorities said on Tuesday.

Robert T. Johnson, the Bronx district attorney, said in a statement that the suspects would be arraigned in State Supreme Court, but provided few other details.

A law enforcement official with knowledge of the case said that a former assistant chief of security in one of the jails on Rikers and two captains currently employed by the Correction Department were among those who would be charged.

It was not immediately clear when the beating occurred. The law enforcement official, who insisted on anonymity because the charges had not been announced, said it happened after correction officers conducted a search of the jail after a stabbing. Officers took one inmate to a separate area of the complex and beat him severely, the official said. The inmate’s injuries included two fractured eye sockets and a broken nose.
