GRAINGER COUNTY, Tenn. — Samuel Byron Mc-Cartha, a correctional officer at the Richard L. Bean Juvenile Services Center, was charged with one count of possession of schedule III narcotics, according to the Grainger County Sheriff’s Office.

According to a jail intake report, McCartha, 56, was arrested Saturday by a Tennessee Highway Patrol trooper.

A THP report shows a trooper noticed McCartha standing in front of a 2006 Dodge Dakota at about 11:35 p.m. along U.S. Highway 25E and observed four blue pills that appeared to be Valium in a plastic bag on the truck’s front seat.

According to the report, McCartha admitted he did not have a prescription for the pills and that he had “obtained them for someone else.” His boss, Superintendant Richard L. Bean, said he was suspended without pay Monday until his criminal case is resolved.
