RICHMOND, Va. — Sheriff C.T. Woody Jr. today announced the termination of one employee and the suspension of another, saying their failure to follow Sheriff’s Office policy led to the accidental release of a prisoner last month.
Woody said an internal personnel investigation revealed that the employees failed to adhere to policies and procedures, leading to the release of inmate Maurice Emile from the City Jail. Authorities say Emile robbed a bank soon after being freed but was apprehended within two hours.
Emile was inadvertently freed Sept. 28 as he was waiting to be transferred by U.S. marshals to the Northern Neck for a subsequent temporary transfer into federal custody, Woody has said.
Emile, who had changed into civilian clothes for the transfer, got mixed in with a group of inmates who were to be released and was set freed with them that morning, Woody said at a news briefing the day of the release.
