PINAL COUNTY, Ariz. — A former Chandler police officer who was fired after shooting an unarmed woman is under review after a video showed him pepper spraying a detainee at the Pinal County Sheriff’s Office.
Dan Lovelace is shown in the video pepper spraying an illegal immigrant at the Pinal County Adult Detention Center, according to a report on AZfamily.com.
After being told he would have to wait to use the restroom, the detainee reportedly defecated on the floor of a recreational area. Other detainees reportedly goaded him into this action, AZfamily.com reports.
Lovelace pepper sprayed the detainee after he failed to comply with an order to lie down. Lovelace and other officers were attempting to remove the detainee because fecal matter on his hands created a biohazard situation.
The officer has been assigned to duties not requiring him to interact with inmates while the case is being reviewed. According to the report, this is standard practice any time force is used.
