JEFFERSON COUNTY, Ark. — A deputy has resigned after police arrested him and a jail inmate at the scene of a crash.
According to KATV, police responded to the scene Jan. 21. Dallas County Sheriff’s Investigator Chance Dodson, 42, and Dallas County jail inmate Jason Poole, 38, were in Dodson’s personal vehicle when they drove into a ditch and crashed into a fence. Both were intoxicated.
In footage of the incident, Dodson can be heard questioning why officers are cuffing him and telling them that they’re “on the same team.”
Dallas County deputies are allowed to check out inmates for work so they can earn extra money, according to KARK. Dodson had reportedly taken Poole to get firewood from his home.
Police believe Dodson was too drunk to drive and asked Poole to drive for him, leading to the crash.
In the wake of the incident, the policy for checking out inmates has become more stringent.
Dodson resigned from the agency and was charged with disorderly conduct. Poole has been charged with DWI.
