CUMBERLAND, Md. (AP) — A trial is under way for a fired Maryland correctional officer accused of beating six inmates at the maximum-security North Branch Correctional Institution in March 2008.

Jury selection began Wednesday morning for the trial of 42-year-old Tony Nery, of Chambersburg, Pa.

He is charged with six counts of second-degree assault and six of conspiracy to commit second-degree assault.

Nery is the first of six former North Branch guards to face trial for the alleged assaults.

Nine other state correctional officers at the Roxbury Correctional Institution near Hagerstown were charged in February with assaulting an inmate there. Two have pleaded guilty, one had charges dropped and one had a trial that ended in a hung jury.
