RANCHO CUCAMONGA — A death investigation was launched at West Valley Detention Center after an Adelanto man, who was arrested on drug offenses last week in Rancho Cucamonga, was found dead Sunday.
Robert Mark Lundberg, 50, was found around 1:30 p.m. on the floor of his housing unit at the jail, just below the second tier, suffering from severe head trauma, according to a news release from the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department.
Jail medical staff, Rancho Cucamonga fire and personnel from American Medical Response responded to the facility, but Lundberg was pronounced dead. According to authorities, Lundberg was the only inmate assigned to his cell and was the only inmate out of his cell at the time of the incident.
Lundberg was arrested late Friday night in the area of Tapia Via and Grove Avenue in Rancho Cucamonga on outstanding drug warrants as well as new alleged drug offenses, according to sheriff’s booking information.
Court records show that one of the warrants was issued Thursday out of Victorville Superior Court for a speeding and driving on a suspended license case after he failed to appear for his arraignment.
Homicide detectives are conducting the investigation. Lundberg’s cause of death is pending an autopsy which will be conducted by the Riverside County Coroner’s Office, as is standard procedure for an in-custody death.
