CETENNIAL, Colo. — A sheriff’s official told media that an Arapahoe County sheriff’s deputy was disciplined for accidentally firing a TASER and hitting a restrained, “unruly” inmate.

The incident happened Oct. 3, 2014, in a holding cell at Arapahoe County courthouse, according to The Denver Channel.

“It occurred at the courthouse in a hold cell while we were dealing with an uncooperative and unruly inmate,” said Chief Vince Line. “There was an inadvertent TASER deployment and [it] did strike an inmate. That inmate was restrained.

“A thorough internal affairs administrative investigation was conducted. There were sustained finding of policy violations and appropriate discipline was given out as a result of it.”

One deputy was disciplined.

Line said he wasn’t aware of any injuries to the inmate as a result of the incident. He said he couldn’t discuss specifics since the sheriff’s office considers internal affair investigations and discipline “confidential personal matters.”

Colorado has ruled that such internal affairs investigative records are not subject to the “personnel files” exemption of the Colorado Open Records Act.
