LOS ANGELES — A deputy is being hailed as a hero after video captured him saving the life of a choking inmate.
KTLA reports that Los Angeles County Sheriff’s deputies at the Peter J. Pitchess Detention-South Facility noticed a inmate choking in the facility’s dining room on Saturday. Deputy Carlos Escamilla saw the 36-year-old inmate turning purple and performed the Heimlich maneuver.
After six to seven forcible thrusts, the deputy managed to dislodge the piece of food stuck in the inmate’s throat. The inmate was assessed by medical staff and didn’t suffer any residual effects from the incident.
Escamilia said that “it felt great just to help somebody out.” He also said the inmate thanked him and the other inmates in the dining room gave him a standing ovation, according to KABC.
