RACINE — A Racine County Jail inmate broke into a grin Wednesday in court — not often the norm for someone accused of brawling in jail about a couple bags of pork rinds.

But then again, Antonio D. Redick, 25, of Mount Pleasant, had just heard he no longer would be facing criminal charges stemming from last month’s fight with another inmate. During what was to be Redick’s preliminary hearing on Wednesday, Racine County Assistant District Attorney Randy Schneider said prosecutors were asking to dismiss the charges: felony battery by prisoners and misdemeanor disorderly conduct.

“Do you have any objection to that?” called out retired Judge Stephen Simanek, who was filling in as court commissioner.

“Not at all, sir,” Redick said grinning. Racine County prosecutors charged Redick and fellow inmate Anthony G. Patterson, 53, of Racine, after a fight erupted between the two inmates on Jan. 18.

The dispute reportedly centered around two bags of pork rinds: Patterson said Redick walked into Patterson’s cell and began touching his stuff, and when Patterson confronted Redick, Redick began punching him. Redick contended the pork rinds were payment owed to Redick for braiding Patterson’s hair, according to their criminal complaints. Redick said when he went to collect that fee, Patterson started hitting him with a sock he was swinging — which held a bar of soap, the complaints stated.
