YUBA CITY, Calif. — A man fleeing from Sutter County police officers conveniently ran toward the county jail, where a deputy not involved in the chase took him into custody for being in a restricted area.
The SacBee reports that the man was one of three Florida residents who were in a Jeep observed running a red light around 1:30 p.m. on Saturday. A CHP officer tried to pull the Jeep over by activating his lights and sirens, but the driver would not stop for about a quarter of a mile.
At that point, the three men ran from the vehicle. Two were caught nearby, but the third ran behind the Sutter County Jail.
A Sutter County Sheriff’s deputy who was not part of the chase saw the driver of the Jeep running in a restricted area. The driver drew a handgun from his waistband, prompting the deputy to open fire. The driver then gave up and was taken into custody.
Marijuana was found in the Jeep, and officers suspect the men took the marijuana at gunpoint from someone in Yuba City.
