MIAMI-DADE — The persistent rat infestation at the Miami-Dade County Jail led to a rodent recently biting an inmate in the testicle.

The rodents have been a nagging problem in the aging and dilapidated building, according to employees and inmates, one of a series of embarrassing recent headlines for Miami-Dade’s Corrections and Rehabilitation Department.

The jail system’s medical services have come under intense scrutiny after several inmates, including two on the mental health wing of the male jail, have died. Turmoil has led to the resignation of three high-level medical services staffers from Jackson Health System, which treats inmates.
