CHICAGO — After just four days in the Kendall County Jail, Ryan Cleary apparently had enough.

Sometime before 9:30 a.m. Monday, the 20-year-old Montgomery man apparently got into the ceiling above his cell then crawled about 25 feet and hid on top of ventilation ductwork, police said.

It was there, in a part of the jail’s suspended ceiling, that deputies found the 5-foot-11, 145 pound Cleary.

Kendall County Sheriff Cmdr. Sabrina Jennings said he could not have escaped from the ceiling because the ventilation systems are built to thwart such a jailbreak.

Police said Cleary had been arrested Thursday and charged with aggravated battery to a police officer and aggravated resisting a police officer after fighting with officers who were trying to serve a warrant at his home.

He’s now facing additional charges of attempted escape and criminal damage to state-supported property.

Jennings said there has been only one other serious escape attempt in the current jail since 1992. In January 1998, an Earlville man was caught chipping away at the window sill of his cell.
