GRANTS, New Mexico — A sewer line in New Mexico was plugged for nearly a week, causing nearby manholes to overflow and let raw sewage to run over the streets.
While trying to unplug the large pipe, workers found inmate uniforms and shoes stuck inside, according to the Cibola Beacon.
“Though the uniforms and shoes may have contributed to the pipe being plugged, they are not the only reason,” said City of Grants Manager Robert Horacek. “The pipes are also aging and there is other debris in there.”
The uniforms were traced back to the Cibola County Correctional Center (also known as Four C’s) in Milan, which holds more than 1,500 men. Councilman Martin Hicks raised the issue of inmate uniforms in the sewage pipes early last year.
“Four C’s in Milan needs a screen before their sewer flows into the municipalities system,” Hicks said. “This has got to stop because it is costing the City of Grants a lot of money. The prisons are good for the economy but they are not being good neighbors when it comes to our sewage system.”
