NORFOLK, Va. — For two hours, the inmates made demands: A reduced sentence. A cellphone and a call to Gov. Bob McDonnell. Chinese food.
In the end, all they got were individual jail cells.
Five inmates in the City Jail tied bedsheets to their cell door to prevent deputies from entering and issued ultimatums for about two hours Tuesday, according to the Sheriff’s Office. The inmates were considered “high custody level,” and one had been sentenced to life plus 63 years, spokeswoman Paula Miller said.
After talking with the inmates, deputies eventually forced entry into the cell, Miller said. The inmates weren’t charged in the incident but face disciplinary action from the jail, she added.
