Kyrgyz inmates on hunger strike over prostitute ban

Now only relatives will be allowed to visit inmates

BISHKEK — Inmates at prisons in Kyrgyzstan, one of the world’s six independent Turkic states are engaging in a hunger strike over new restrictions barring them from being visited by prostitutes.

Joldochbek Bouzourmankoulov, spokesman for the country’s prison sentencing agency said seven prisoners have refused to take their meals, according to AFP.

“Prisoners had the right for visits from their families and ‘other’ people,” he said. “But under the label for ‘others,’ they were bringing prostitutes to the prison,” he said according to the article.

Now only relatives will be allowed to visit inmates.
