BOSSIER PARISH, La. — A Bossier Parish corrections officer is leaving his job at the sheriff’s office to pursue a career in professional baseball.
Corrections Officer Randy Zeigler, 26, was drafted by the Lincoln Nebraska Saltdogs after impressing recruiters with his 91 mph left-handed fastball.
Zeigler told Inside Edition that as a senior in college at Louisiana State University in 2012, he was drafted to play for the San Francisco Giants, but “couldn’t make ends meet with the low baseball salary at the time.”
“I think it’s the talent the good lord’s given me and I wanna use the gifts he has given me to the best of my ability,” Zeigler said.
Prior to working at the sheriff’s office, Zeigler worked in an oil field.
“He’s chasing his dream. I hope the best of him, I hope he goes out and remembers us down the road,” Captain Linton Jacobs said.
