BRIDGEPORT, Conn. — A Floridian charged with hacking a Connecticut homeless man to death with an ax and eating some of his brain and an eyeball has pleaded not guilty to murder.

The Connecticut Post reports that Tyree Smith, a Florida resident who grew up in Ansonia, Conn., also waived his right Monday to a probable cause hearing in Bridgeport Superior Court.

The 35-year-old Smith is charged with murdering Angel Gonzalez in Bridgeport on Dec. 15. He was arrested in his hometown of Lynn Haven, Fla., in January.

Gonzalez’s relatives say Smith deserves a sentence of life in prison.

Smith’s lawyer, Corrie-Ann L. Mainville, objected to a TV news crew in the courtroom. Judge Robert Devlin overruled her, saying the case has significant public interest.
