SHELTON, Conn. — A Connecticut man accused of sexually assaulting a horse was granted a special form of probation Thursday that will allow his criminal record to be cleared after two years — as long as he stays out of trouble.

Marian Wegiel was arrested in October after a neighbor said she saw him sexually abusing the family’s horse. The neighbor said she saw him “pumping his arm” into the back side of the family’s only female horse, and that the horse was yelping in pain.

He told police that he was comforting the horses because they were scared by a loud noise, and he may have “inadvertently put his fingers inside one of the horses,” according to the Valley Independent Sentinel.

Police initially charged Wegiel with fourth-degree sexual assault, cruelty to animals, third-degree criminal trespass and second-degree breach of peace.

As a part of his sentence, Wegiel must continue his psychological sessions until successfully discharged, according to reports. He is ordered to stay away from the victims and their property, have no unsupervised contact with animals and finish 50 hours of community service in a year.
