MONROE COUNTY, Tenn. — The Monroe County Sheriff says the damage done to two cells in the jail after several inmates went on a rampage last week, has been repaired.

Sheriff Bill Bivens says the disturbance started when the inmates in two of the cells were denied their evening meal because they refused to put their clothes on before being served.

They became angry, and began breaking cameras, lighting fixtures, televisions, and showers. At one point, some of them even ripped a bunk of the wall and used it to ram a cell door open.

Bivens says at least 15 inmates were involved. Officers were finally able to gain control of the prisoners, restrain them, and move them to another cell.

All the damage has been repaired, and inmates are once again being held in those cells.

Charges are pending against the inmates involved. There were no serious injuries to the prisoners or the officers.

Charges are pending against several Monroe County jail inmates after they vandalized and tried to keep officers out of their cells.

Investigators say on Thursday, November 17 around 9 pm, inmates in two cells began destroying property that was inside their cells, including cameras, bunks, lighting fixtures, phones, televisions, and showers. Their vandalism also led to flooding in both cells.

The inmates in one of the cells used a bunk that was ripped from the floor to breach the cell door. Officers got control of those inmates, restrained them, and moved them to a different cell.

Officers then got into the second cell, even though the inmates tried to jam the door, and restrained them. They were also moved to a different cell.

Charges are pending against several inmates, whose names have not been released.

No inmates or officers were seriously injured.
