MARTIN COUNTY, Fla. — A photo shared by the Martin County Sheriff’s Office shows a pair of handcuffs twisted and broken by an inmate using “sheer strength and unpredictability” during an incident at the jail.

The damage occurred during an encounter with an inmate experiencing significant mental health issues. According to the sheriff’s office, the inmate was able to force one cuff off, creating a rapidly evolving situation for corrections deputies inside the facility.

In this case, the sheriff’s office said the corrections team acted quickly to regain control of the situation. The inmate was safely restrained, and no injuries were reported to either the inmate or the deputies involved.

The agency said the incident highlights the training, vigilance and professionalism required of corrections staff who work behind the secure doors of the facility every day.
