LINCOLN, Neb. — Two people incarcerated at the Nebraska State Penitentiary allegedly assaulted four staff members Wednesday, leaving one of them with serious injuries, state prison officials said.

The assaults happened when staff members were escorting one of the individuals to a holding area, according to a news release from the Nebraska Department of Correctional Services.

The person being escorted and another inmate punched the staff members multiple times, the release said.

One of the staff members sustained a serious injury that required medical treatment, including stitches for a facial laceration.

An investigation into the incident is underway. The names of those involved were not immediately made available.

The release said findings will be provided to the Lancaster County attorney for criminal prosecution. The department’s disciplinary process will also be used and may include sanctions such as loss of good time.
