BRENTWOOD, N.H. — A Rockingham County Jail corrections officer was hospitalized with serious head injuries after being assaulted by an inmate, according to court documents.

The incident happened on Jan. 13 inside the New Hampshire jail, where officials say inmate Thomas Ludwig, 31, became violent during an argument with an officer over returning to his cell, WCVB reports.

According to court records, the officer attempted to escort Ludwig back to his cell when Ludwig allegedly picked the officer up and slammed him head-first into the ground. The impact caused the officer’s body to go limp.

Surveillance video captured the assault, court documents state, showing the officer with a large head wound and bleeding heavily following the attack.

The officer suffered three brain bleeds and was initially treated at Exeter Hospital before being transferred to a Boston-area hospital for specialized care.

Ludwig was being held at the Rockingham County Jail at the time of the assault. He is being held without bail and facing multiple charges, including first- and second-degree assault.
