AUBURN, N.Y. — Several correction officers at Auburn Correctional Facility were injured after inmates assaulted them earlier this month, according to the union representing state correction officers.

Five officers with varying injuries were taken to hospitals in Auburn and Syracuse after the assault on Sept. 4, the New York State Correctional Officers & Police Benevolent Association said in a news release Tuesday.

A brawl started in the maximum security prison’s recreation yard after an inmate struck the back of the head of a sergeant, officials said.

The officer fell forward and struck her head on a metal fence post, knocking her unconscious, they said. She was concussed and fractured her elbow.

Five officers chased the inmate across the yard and put him into a body hold to restrain him, the union said.

Officers maced another inmate who approached the unconscious sergeant, despite several orders to back away, officials said.

That inmate was taken to the prison’s infirmary, where he head-butted an officer in the head and spat blood at other COs, the union said.

The sergeant was taken to Upstate University Hospital. Four others were transported to Auburn Community Hospital, the union said.

One officer had a fractured metacarpal bone in his hand. The other three suffered back, hip and shoulder injuries, according to the union.

The inmate who attacked the sergeant was transferred to Attica Correctional Facility, union officials said.
