MONTGOMERY, Ala. — A former state prison officer has pleaded guilty for his role in a conspiracy to smuggle contraband into Kilby Correctional Facility.

Mario Grant, 35, on Monday pleaded guilty to use of position for person gain. A second charge of promoting prison contraband was dismissed as part of the plea.

According to the Alabama Department of Correction, Grant received a 10-year split sentence with two years to serve in prison. Once his prison sentence is complete, he will serve three years on supervised probation.

According to charging documents, the alleged crimes happened between July 2023 and September 2023 while Grant was a corrections officer at Kilby.

Depositions stated Grant and his wife, 33-year-old Carole Matsey Grant, received money from inmates via Cash App to bring drugs into the lockup.

Carole Grant , warrants stated, received the payments from the inmates and then transferred that money to her husband.

Grant’s wife was sentenced on Aug. 6 , to a 48-month suspended sentence and 36 months of supervised probation for her involvement in the case.

The investigation began on August 21, 2023, when ADOC K-9 officers conducted a contraband search at Kilby.

During the search, inmate Jeffery Frank was found in possession of approximately 27.4 grams of methamphetamine, 10.7 grams of marijuana, and a cell phone.

Evidence indicated that Frank had paid Mario Grant to introduce contraband at Kilby.

The couple was arrested in 2024.

Frank is still facing charges in connection with the case, prison officials said.
