MONTGOMERY, Ala. — A new automated system in Alabama will be notifying victims when an inmate is up for parole.

Al.com reports that the system, called AlabamaCAN, went live Wednesday and can be accessed at victims.alabama.gov.

“Protecting the rights of victims should always be the top priority for lawmakers,” Sen. Cam Ward said. “I am proud to have worked with victims’ advocates to pass this bill, which will ensure that victims of violence receive proper notification on the status of criminals who committed these terrible crimes.”

The new system was funded through grant dollars, and could save the state money in the long run.

Though victims are often signed up by parole officers, others who are interested can also find updates about state inmates. Those sighed up for the system will receive 30 days notification in advance of the inmate’s parole hearing.

Other features will likely be added to the website soon, such as notification on appellate court matters from the Attorney General’s Office and notifications of medical furloughs or escapes.
