MARICOPA COUNTY, Ariz. – After assaulting a Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office detention officer, an inmate was put on bread and water.

According to AZ Central, inmate Arryck Blanton was moved to Fourth Avenue Jail and booked on suspicion of aggravated assault. He was then placed on a bread-and-water program, which was originally introduced by Sheriff Joe Arpaio to punish inmates who desecrated American flags he had hung in their cells.

Detention Officer M. Johnson was escorting Blanton and his cellmate through the second level of their housing unit when Blanton suddenly turned and punched the officer four or five times in the face.

A responding officer subdued Blanton with a TASER.

Johnson is currently on leave after being taken to a hospital and treated for a broken nose.
