FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – A woman accused of stealing automotive fluid and a pack of gum is now being accused of biting a Washington County Detention Center officer.
5 News Online reports that Summer Jones was in a temporary holding cell on misdemeanor charges when she attacked the CO.
Jones allegedly started screaming and banging her head on her cell door, prompting the CO to talk to her. Jones claimed she needed to be taken to the hospital. As she was talking to the CO, Jones wrapped her hair around her own neck and attempted to choke herself.
The CO entered the cell to prevent Jones from harming herself, and that was when Jones struck the CO in the face with a closed fist.
The CO’s eyeglasses were broken and her head hit the wall of the cell, according to 5 News Online.
Other COs responded to the incident, prompting Jones to spit in the face of the first CO and another. When one CO put their hand over Jones’ mouth to prevent more spitting, the inmate bit the CO’s hand.
The Sheriff said that Jones indicated that she was mentally ill and under the care of a mental professional. The jail is currently not equipped to handle mentally ill inmates but is working on updating their policies.
