ROME, Ga. — A Floyd County Jail inmate avoided the maximum sentence by pleading guilty for his role in a gang-related riot.
The Northwest Georgia News reports that Quavarez Marquel Cunningham avoided a 70 year sentence by pleading guilty, instead being sentenced to only a year in prison, followed by nine years of probation and 120 hours of community service.
He was one of four inmates who pleaded guilty to riot and gang accusations.
The other inmates involved were Twomya Lamar Cheeks, James Alvin Cotton and Christopher Thomas Warren; all were sentenced for their roles in the November 2013 incident.
All four men’s sentences restrict them from gang membership or associating with a gang member. Violating those conditions could put them behind bars for the remainder of their probation.
The charges stem from two separate incidents in November 2013 at the Floyd County Jail, when the men, as part of the Gangster Disciples, assaulted another inmate.
Prosecutors dropped charges of aggravated battery, false imprisonment and terroristic threats and acts when the men pleaded guilty.
