MARYSVILLE, Calif. — A Yuba County Jail corrections officer was injured in a scuffle with an inmate who now faces criminal charges of assault and bringing a weapon into the jail.

David E. Cotter, 24, has pleaded not guilty to felony charges of battery on an officer causing injury, resisting an officer and bringing a weapon into a county jail for an incident on Aug. 8.

He remains in custody at the jail with no bail.

While Cotter was armed with an exposed razor blade he had removed from a jail-issued shaving razor, the officer was not injured by it, Undersheriff Jerry Read said. The officer suffered soft tissue damage after a wrestling match, he said.

Cotter was in custody awaiting transport to prison when the incident occurred. He was sentenced to six years in state prison for robbery on Aug. 3.
