URBANA, Ill. — A Champaign man who spat on a correctional officer at the Champaign County Jail was sentenced Wednesday to 10 years in prison.
But it wasn’t just a single incident of expectorating that netted Emmanuel Chapple the hefty sentence. In April, a jury convicted Chapple, 25, whose last known address was in the 300 block of East Park Avenue, of aggravated battery to a correctional officer. Because it was Chapple’s third conviction for a Class 2 or greater felony, he had to be sentenced as a Class X felon, meaning a mandatory prison term of between six and 30 years.
The incident for which he was being sentenced happened Jan. 14 at the downtown Urbana jail and involved Chapple spitting on Officer Craig Wakefield through the talk hole of his cell door.
